Reminder for Sept 4th Mtg, now at RIT’s Center for Student Innovation

Quick reminder about the new location, and topic update… Please RSVP to info@AppRochester.com

1) We have a new, PERMANENT mtg place… RIT’s Center for Student Innovation (see below for map/directions)

2) Jennifer Shanley, of Zwirlz fame and prMac.com will be presenting on the following topics:

iBetatest.com, a new service from prMac.com to help you easily send beta versions for Ad Hoc testing
- prMac’s News / Press Release service from prMac by Jen

3) Our own Steve Maier will discuss the process of updating his Thoughts and Prayers app to include In App purchases

4) I’ll discuss the booth I booked for Rochester Comic Con.  Let me know if you want your app featured and/or want to man the booth.

Jennifer has arranged for prMac/iBetatest to sponsor the food and drinks so let’s thank them.  I helped write some code for iBetatest and I’m a paying customer of prMac, so I highly recommend them.  It’s a very affordable way to get your press releases out to the right people, and help with searchability.

Follow signs to Lot S (D7 quadrant on map) and park in any Visitor space located as far forward and to the right as they can.
The building in front of them will be Crossroads (also in D7 on map), and the Center for Student Innovation is a round, glass building located behind it (marked as CSI in D6 on map).

New mtg location = RIT Center for Student Innovation, from now on!

Thanks to the great turnout, and great location/parking/amenities/space/equipment/reception, and to the work of Professor Tom Kolankiewicz and the folks at RIT, we will now have our 1st Tuesday AppRochester meetings at RIT in the Center for Student Innovation instead of New Horizons.
This new location meets many needs.  We can accommodate the increasingly larger number of attendees, without ‘standing room only’ and we can spread out, leverage plenty of parking, stay later (9pm instead of 8:30pm), and still there’s no charge to us.  We should also be able to pickup more RIT students as they won’t have to travel and that will bring in some new blood to the group.

Our next meeting will be September 4th, and, through February, we’ve locked in the location for the first Tuesday each month EXCEPT in January, when we will meet on January 8th instead of on New Year’s Day… should be better for everyone.  Here are the dates:
9/4
10/2
11/6
12/4
1/8
2/5
I want to thank New Horizons for their past support, and obviously, if you have any needs for professional/technical training, be sure to consider them.

August 7th mtg – DIFFERENT LOCATION for this mtg only!

Microsoft mtg WED MAY 30th instead of a June mtg!

May 30th – Instead of our normal First Tuesday mtg, we are leveraging the fact that Microsoft evangelist Dani Diaz will be in the area, on a swing through Western NY, so he will speak re Windows Phone on May 30th, from 6pm to 8:15pm.  Should be lots of Microsoft goodies so be sure to RSVP to info@AppRochester.com

This is a WEDNESDAY and will take the place of our June meeting.  PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF THIS.

Details on his talk are here:

Also, our July and August meetings will be held at RIT.  Details to come.

May Meeting(s) plus important changes/news for June/July/August

1) Our May 1st mtg is rapidly approaching.  Since the first Tuesday falls on the first day of the month, it’s easy to forget about, so put it on your calendar and please RSVP to info@AppRochester.com.  6pm – 8:15pm at New Horizons in Henrietta, 50 Methodist Hill.
2) Topics for that May 1st meeting include:
- Professor Tom K. will continue his discussion of porting to Nook/Kindle/etc.
- Todd’s recap of both Rochester Startup Weekend (WHICH IS THIS WEEKEND! Price dropped to $49 from $99)
- Todd’s recap of NYC BigApps 3.0 Award Ceremony / event with Mayor Bloomberg
- Steve’s discussion of Push Notifications, which he’s enabled on both iOS and Windows Phone
- Show & Tell from members, including helping me redesign an app rejected by Apple
3) For our NEXT meeting, after this, instead of a June event, we will have a WEDNESDAY May 30th event (at New Horizons) with Microsoft’s Evangelist Dani Diaz presenting.  I’ve attended his talk in NYC and it should be a good use of your time.
4) For the summer (July and August) we will be relocating to RIT’s Center for Student Innovation, thanks to Professor Tom’s efforts.
5) For Rochester Startup Weekend, visit http://rochester.startupweekend.org/ and let me know if you’re going.  I have an app idea I could use a team for.
6) Congrats to our own members, Jennifer Shanley (Zwirlz app) for her nomination as Rochester Technology Woman of the Year and to Ryan Schnaufer for his winning the Young Entrepreneur Academy prize (Quiz Kid app)
7) We have some great sponsorships/gifts coming… stay tuned!

March 6th mtg – Tips & Tricks

For March 6th, we will be presenting/moderating a discussion of Tips & Tricks! They can be technical and marketing based.

For example, I’ll present a few lines of code that detect if you’re running on an iPad or iPhone and adjust the user interface accordingly.

We encourage you to be ready to present your own as well. You can email me some text and or screenshots and I’ll put them in my presentation, or send me a PowerPoint/PDF/Keynote to display, or be prepared to present from your own system.

Remember, presenters get first dibs on the prizes… and I have some great ones from CES & MacWorld!

Please RSVP to info@AppRochester.com Meetings are at New Horizons in Henrietta, 50 Methodist Hill from 6pm to 8:15 and pizza/drinks will be provided.

See you tonight, Feb 7th for CES and MacWorld review plus app show and tell
